The United States Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has
cited Dollar Tree Store, Inc. for one willful and one repeat safety and health violations. These
violations come in response to an inspections in June of a store in New Castle, Delaware. The
violations are for improperly stored boxes and a failure to keep the work area around electrical
panels clear. This is the second time this year that Dollar Tree has been cited for safety and
health violations. To date, OSHA has issued more than $800,000 in fines to Dollar Tree Stores
for safety and health violations. These violations carry proposed penalties of $103,000.
“The continued complaints and subsequent OSHA inspections demonstrate Dollar Tree’s
disregard for worker safety. The company has not addressed hazards we see repeatedly
nationwide. Dollar Tree continues to make sizable profits at the expense of exposing workers to
serious injuries,” said Erin G. Patterson, OSHA’s area director in Wilmington.
The fines for these violations is larger than normal because of the history Dollar Tree Stores has
with OSHA. Basically, if you are ever subjected to an OSHA inspection, and they cite violations,
fix them. The cost to fix them is never as great as the cost of multiple repeat violations. It is
always advisable to contact a fully qualified third party occupational safety and health auditing
firm to help ensure whatever plan you put in place is accurate and effective.
