Lockout tagout, which is governed by The United States Department of Labor’s Occupational
Safety and Health Administration’s Standard 1910.147, is one of the least understood areas of
occupational safety and health. It is also, however, one of the most important. It is important
because it is a requirement that is seen in every facility across America, so it is about as common
a procedure as there is. It is also important because improperly created lockout tagout procedures
put employees at risk of serious injury and death; lockout tagout procedures are truly the last line
defense for employees dealing with something potentially fatal. And finally, it is important
because it is one of the most commonly cited OSHA violations and it carries one of the heftiest
fines.
So if you have not recently reviewed your lockout tagout procedures, or if you are in any way
concerned about them, it is probably a good idea to review them for accuracy. Any time you
update your facility, be it by upgrading equipment, moving machines, or changing personnel,
you need to reflect those changes on the lockout tagout procedures. So the maintenance piece to
lockout tagout can be very time consuming.
Fortunately, if this all sounds like a lot of work, we have a solution for you. It is our Factory
