We at PF Safety would like to wish all of our readers a happy and healthy holiday season. As

you celebrate your holiday of choice, please remember that accidents can and do happen at this

time of year, especially in retail environments which can become hectic in this busy time. Please

remember to follow safety policies and procedures at all times throughout the season.

If you will be decorating for the holidays, here are a few tips to help keep your facility, and your

employees, safe:

Put Timers on Holiday Lights: Many facilities have lights which remain on all day every day.

And if they are designed for that, it is not a safety issue. Holiday lights, however, are generally

not designed in the same way. So if you are in the habit of leaving your lights on all the time, put

a timer or a procedure in place to ensure the light go off every day. Otherwise, the lights could

overheat and cause a fire.

Water Trees: If you put a live tree, bush, plant, or anything else in your facility with lights on it,

please make sure you water it. Dry trees can become a fire hazard, especially if lights are put on

them. The lights can get hot, and dry pine needles will easily ignite.

Blow Out Candles: Candles are a festive way to celebrate any holiday. That being said, they can

quickly lead to fires when left burning for too long or unattended. If you are leaving the facility,

room, or area where the candle is, blow it out. If it has been burning for an extended period of

time, blow it out.

All of our safety tips relate to fire safety, because we see a lot of fire incidents at this time of

year. And I can’t think of a worse way to ruin a holiday than a dangerous fire.
